How queer people will be hurt

Anti-LGBTQ+ policies serve as wedge issues, but also function to consolidate control. Under this administration, queer and trans lives are especially at risk:

  • Same-sex marriage rollbacks: Legal challenges to Obergefell are already in motion. Expect conservative courts to allow states to stop recognizing queer marriages.
  • Gender-affirming care bans: What began in red states is now escalating. Care for trans youth and adults may be criminalized nationwide, with doctors prosecuted.
  • Detention risks: As asylum rules tighten and ICE expands authority, queer people—especially immigrants—face disproportionate detention and abuse in custody.
  • Erasure in education: School policies and curriculum guidelines are being rewritten to prohibit mentions of LGBTQ+ identity under the pretense of “parental rights.”
  • Public outing and database threats: In some states, efforts to log gender markers or health data could result in forced outings, public shaming, or denial of benefits.

Historical analog: In fascist Italy and Nazi Germany, queer individuals were among those labeled as social deviants, sent to camps, or used as warnings to enforce conformity.
